Joost Krijnen – l’astronaute provinciale
t/m November 7
Gerhard Hofland is proud to present a solo show by Joost Krijnen. Krijnen makes drawings. The kind of drawings in which the directness of the artist’s gestures and the pureness of the line remain visible and form the core elements. He works both on paper and MDF. His drawings may take the form of a collage, an installation, or even sculpture.
Daily notes, doodles and sketches form the basis for his works. It is the power of these often fast and intuitive drawings, which Krijnen is also able to translate into a larger, more monumental format. In this transformation, it is the trick to keep visible the intuitive aspects and process-like quality and at the same time to create a strong image.
The drawings are often motivated by personal motives from the daily life of the artist. Through an associative drawing process these personal experiences are transformed into a work where a search into a balanced composition, the right lines, shapes and colors becomes the focus. This delicate process stays visible and tangible in the finished drawings. It is this combination between sketchy immediacy and thoughtful precision, between the formal and the purely personal that makes Krijnen’s drawings so fascinating.
Joost Krijnen (1983, Breda) lives and works in Amsterdam. He studies fine arts at AKV/St Joost, Breda and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Recently, he won the De Scheffer Prize 2015 of the Dordrecht Museum and he is nominated for the Koninklijke Prijs voor de Schilderkunst 2015. Krijnen exhibited his work at Gallery Mirko Mayer in Cologne and Lokaal 01 in Antwerp, among other places.
